This past week has been rife with new trailers and film news. The Elton John biopic, Rocketman, released its trailer recently, as did the Dick Cheney film, Vice, and social media has been overrun with first look images of Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker. Take a look at some of the other big news from the past week below.




Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers in the currently untitled Mr. Rogers/Tom Hanks project. The film tells the story of Fred Rogers, the creator of the children’s television program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. The film is scheduled to be released in 2019.



The first Hellboy poster has been released. Starring David Harbour in the titular role and directed by Neil Marshall, the film is set to be released in cinemas on 12 April 2019.



X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and the latest installment in the X-Men film franchise, follows Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey as her Dark Phoenix personality is unleashed. Featuring Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut, Dark Phoenix is set to be a more faithful adaptation of Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s “The Dark Phoenix Saga” than X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). The first images of Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker were released by director Todd Phillips on his Instagram account. Simply titled Joker, the film is currently scheduled to hit theatres on 4 October 2019. The film will chart his origins from failed stand-up comic to his rise as the Clown Prince of Crime who terrorised Gotham City.

Vice, the story of VP Dick Cheney’s rise to power, debuted its trailer yesterday. The film stars Christian Bale as Cheney, Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush and Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney. Directed by Adam McKay, the film is set to be released on 25 December 2018.


Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jason Clarke, Serenity is an upcoming thriller from writer/director Steven Knight. The film is scheduled to be released in the US on 25 January 2019.


Taron Egerton stars as Elton John in this musical fantasy biopic, directed by Dexter Fletcher. Scheduled to be released on 31 May 2019.


Holmes & Watson is the latest Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly pairing and this time they’re spoofing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. Written and directed by Etan Cohen, the comedy film is set to be released on 21 December 2018.


The latest X-Men film is scheduled to be released on 7 June 2019.

  • Ansel Elgort has won the coveted role of Tony in Steven Spielberg’s planned remake of West Side Story.
  • Black Panther star Winston Duke joins action/thriller Heroine, directed by newcomer Dan Casey.
  • Chelsea Peretti announces she is leaving Brooklyn Nine-Nine after Season 6. The actress plays fan-favourite Gina Linetti.
  • Winston Duke and Mark Wahlberg are teaming up for the Netflix series Wonderland, directed by Peter Berg.
  • Damon Wayans announces he is leaving Lethal Weapon just months after co-star, Clayne Crawford, is fired for bad behaviour. Wayans plans to leave after the run of Season 3.
  • Michelle Williams signs on to play astronaut, Christa McAuliffe, in The Challenger. Based on the 1986 Space Shuttle disaster.
  • Armie Hammer and Gal Gadot are the first official stars added to Kenneth Branagh’s Death On The Nile, the next Agatha Christie adaptation.
